The WBUCC 2024 finish line is in sight and the anticipation is at an all-time high with finals matchups set across the three divisions. From the fierce competition in the Open Division to the electrifying battles in Mixed and Women’s, this tournament has delivered nothing short of thrilling games and cinematic upsets from the world’s best club teams. Let’s recap Day 5 of WBUCC 2024.

Open Division

Humiliswag (US):

Without much surprise, Humiliswag has been a force to reckon with since Day 1 of WBUCC 2024. Although they suffered a big upset in pool play against Quijotes (ES), they’ve put in some serious gritty performances, punishing any and all mistakes by their competitors and capitalizing on those opportunities.

On the other hand, the SunDogs (US) have been on a tear and came into their semi-final match against their fellow compatriots as confident as ever. However, Humiliswag would extinguish that flame with relative ease, leading the match early and definitively. Leading by as many as 8 points, Humiliswag showed no mercy and dispatched the SunDogs quickly and securing their spot in the WBUCC 2024 Open Division final.

Jetset Open (BE):

In the highly anticipated semi-final rematch between the Belgian squad, Jetset Open, and Latvia’s Salaspils Wild Things, we as fans were treated to a beautiful game of Beach Ultimate. Both teams did delivered on their reputations: holding offensive scores with precision and efficiency. With each team holding serve, Salaspils took a narrow lead into halftime. But, straight out of the gate, Jetset quickly flipped the switch and saw #1 Lander Decraene score the only break for the game. The Belgians continued to execute their offense flawlessly, scoring their offensive points and completing their fated rematch in a clinical victory.

With this win, Jetset heads towards the WBUCC 2024 final as they continue in their pursuit to be champions.

Salaspils Wild Things (LV):

In the WBUCC 2024 3rd place matchup between the Salaspils and SunDogs, the Latvians put on the burners late in the game to edge out the Americans. The game was neck-and-neck and saw fierce competition on both sides of the disc. Salaspils was able to grab an offensive hold on Galaxy Point and continued to push their momentum to take back-to-back break scores after halftime. Of course, #99 Arvīds Žanis Kārkliņš showed himself again to be one of Europe’s top offensive players, contributing 3 assists and 3 goals in the Salaspils’s 13-10 victory.

The dynamic Salaspils Wild Things are your WBUCC 2024 bronze medalists.

Many circled this match as a potential final, but Freezgo and Guayota (ES) found each other early in the semi-finals. This match was a thriller, with fans and players alike biting their nails and holding their breath. Freezgo used their height advantage to its full extent, grabbing seemingly out-of-reach, impossible discs. Early in the match, Guayota’s intense defense forced Freezgo into a high-stall throwaway, but in one of the tournament’s most athletic plays, Freezgo never gave up on an out-of-bounds disc and saw a truly jaw-dropping Greatest. The momentum and energy were infectious, blowing the top off the arena with thunderous cheers. However, Guayota steadied the ship and responded brilliantly, leading the game by one break score late.

As the time cap hit, the French called a critical timeout to settle their nerves and one by one, clawed back for consecutive points scored by none other than #5 Simon Ruelle. Freezgo sealed the victory and punched their ticket to the WBUCC 2024 Mixed Division final.

Margarita Mix’d (IR):

In a tightly contested and perfectly even match, the Margaritas had their hands full with the lightning-quick Borocay Ultimate (PH). Neither team was able to mount any significant advantage as both teams continued to exchange points. Despite Boracay’s #30 Paul Richie Mariano’s heroic bids, the game ended on a high-energy and drama-filled Universe Point. Margarita held serve with a definitive offensive hold, beating out the Filipinos and clinching their spot in the WBUCC 2024 Mixed Division final.

Women’s Division:

Cassalletes. All credit to Focus Ultimate.

Cassalletes (ES):

The Cassalletes have proven time and time again during their WBUCC 2024 run that they’re able to keep up with the top players in the world. In their 3rd place matchup against Torrijas (BE), they showed the Belgians what suffocating defense was. With the ever-so-often gust of wind coming in from the ocean, Torrijas had a tough time adjusting the height of their throws. Although the Belgian ladies found themselves in a 5-point deficit, they continued to fight on amicably with the full support of an energetic crowd. Their resilience brought the game within one point, but it was the Spaniards who had enough gas and composure to close out the match.

The Cassalletes complete their fantastic WBUCC 2024 run as bronze medalists. Venga, venga, venga! Vamos, vamos, vamos!

Valkyria & E6 (SE):

In what promises to be one of the most exciting matchups, Valkyria and E6 have found themselves a notch above the rest of the competition. Both teams have demonstrated their mastery of the sands, with E6 running through two red-hot teams, Troubles (PL),13-6, and Torrijas (BE) 12-6. Meanwhile, Valkyria also provided fans with two sensational games against top competitors, handling LAMP (US) 13-9 and overcoming the ever-so-strong Spanish Cassalletes, 12-9.

The WBUCC 2024 Women’s Division final has been set and will feature an epic Swedish showdown. E6’s #19 Maja Lindroth heads into the finals with an astounding 46 goals and 3 assists and faces off against Valkyria’s #7 Sarah Eklund with an also impressive 24 goals and 20 assists.
